Wilderness First Aid Basics
The Wilderness First Aid Basics Course is a course for those who, live or play in remote areas - away from the usual EMS service. Even though the emergency workers near these areas may be trained to search for and rescue those in need, there may be a delay in the notification of assistance, the time required to get to the patient, or in moving the patient to more advanced treatment. The types of activities and persons needing more advanced training in first aid could be: * Hikers and Backpackers *Kayakers and canoers * Farm workers *Utility workers *Forest Rangers *Law enforcement and rescue crews *Disaster situations
Course Certification
Wilderness First Aid certificate is valid for 3 years. To be eligible for course certification you must:
- Be present for the entire course.
- Successfully complete all required skills.
- Pass a 50-question multiple choice written exam with a score of 80% or better (40 correct answers).
Prerequisites
- None, although CPR course is highly recommended before or after participation in the Wilderness First Aid course.
- CPR skills will NOT be taught during the course, although the primary survey and assessment skills will be discussed
Objectives
Participants in this course will learn to:
- Identify how to respond to delayed-help emergency situations
- Identify causes of injuries and how injuries can be prevented in wilderness areas
- Learn proper advance preparation for journeys into the backcountry
- Learn the Emergency Action Steps for First Aid Response, to be employed when EMS is not readily available
- Learn basic and more advanced first aid techniques to use when an injury occurs
- Learn how to respond to an emotionally upset victim
- Learn short distance transfer and evacuation techniques
- Experience providing wilderness first aid through the means of scenarios and simulated rescues
What Else?
- Orientation and survival technique topics are discussed in this course along with creating a survival pack.
- Many of the first aid techniques discussed in this course should be used only as a last resort, and not in urban
settings when EMS is available within minutes.
