Swiftwater Rescue Awareness (3.5 hrs) This class is focused on First Responders and those supporting Swiftwater Rescue Teams, such as Police Officers, firefighters, EMTs, Animal Rescue Groups and C.E.R.T. teams. The Swiftwater Rescue Awareness class is designed to provide the student with the knowledge necessary to identify unique hazards that personnel are faced with when responding to swiftwater incidents such as floods and river emergencies. The student will understand how to prioritize initial steps when arriving on scene, identifying the emergency as a swiftwater rescue incident, minimizing risks to bystanders and responders, and early activation of specialty technical rescue teams. The student will develop an understanding of hydrology, river reading, chronic vs. acute hypothermia, dry drowning/wet drowning and proper personal protective equipment. Discussion will also include the importance of establishing a preplan and using a River Survey Hazard Form. This is an awareness level course consisting of lecture format only and no practical exercises are involved. The program meets the NFPA 1670 Standard for Awareness level training. This program does not provide the participant with a Swiftwater Rescuer Operational level of knowledge.
Cost: $40.00 Upon completion of this course you will be eligible for (3) elective CEU credits from the New Jersey Dept. of Health - Office of Emergency Services NJDOH OEMS.
